groudon always seemed like a kiddy lego toy to me.don't get me wrong i love gen 3, have a lot of nostalgia for it and i like the generally brighter color palettes, nothing wrong with legos either. but it does look less intimidating because it looks like a lego toy. lugia was more intimidating by comparison because it looked like it could be real (aside from the blue eye triangle thingies, which i like but they do take away from the realism, because it makes lugia look like it's wearing a persona style mask).
kyogre looks more real than groudon, but the bright colors still break the realism. i think the reason they both almost look intimidating is not their bodies but because of their eyes, pitch blackness with yellow beady eyes. rayquaza too. i notice on a lot of pokemon, when you look at their eyes, it's almost like there's a black void around them. staring into the abyss.
